A PRISONER awaiting transfer to jail at Wigan police station was found in possession of cannabis in his cell, a court heard.
Wigan and Leigh Magistrates’ Court was told Devon Ward, from Manchester, was found with a small amount of the class B drug after being forced to wait overnight in custody in Wigan on his way to start an unrelated prison sentence.
Ward, 33, pleaded guilty to owning the drug, which was founded after a police officer was touring the cells and smelt cannabis at around 10.30pm on Monday January 27.
Mike Ardern, prosecuting, said Ward appeared to be concealing something when asked if he had drugs by the officer, who then snatched from his hands a quantity of cannabis worth around £10 and consistent with personal use.
The magistrates gave Ward a conditional discharge lasting for 12 months and ordered the cannabis to be forfeited and destroyed.
