WIGANERS are being warned that the most dismal weather yet for the region is on the way.

The Met office has issued a red warning, which is its highest, for the North West between 1.30pm and 9pm today (Wednesday).

As a result, rail bosses have also announced that the West Coast Mainline will close for a couple of hours from 7pm just north of the town between Preston and Cumbria.

During the afternoon a swathe of exceptionally strong winds is expected to affect the area with winds expected to gust 80mph widely and possibly reach 100mph in the most exposed location.

A statement on the Met office website says: “Winds of this strength can cause widespread structural damage, bringing down trees and also leading to loss of power supplies.

“In addition, large waves are likely to affect some coasts. The public should take action to alter their travel arrangements during this spell of storm force winds”
