Road, rail and tram boost in 2040 plans

Transport bosses have unveiled an ambitious strategy which could see major improvements to Wigan's roads, railways and buses.

The 2040 strategy revealed by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) includes proposals to link up Wigan Wallgate and Wigan North Western stations and run both trams and trains along the Atherton line.

The strategy also proposes working with Wigan Council to create better links between junction 25 of the M6 at Marus Bridge and the town centre.

The document also supports ongoing projects such as the A58 and A49 link roads to ease congestion and upgrades to the bus network as well as backing future schemes such as London-style franchised buses.

Unveiling the masterplan, TfGM said the projects suggested were vital to boosting Wigan’s economy and ensuring it remained an attractive destination for new businesses and housebuilders.

TfGM transport strategy director Simon Warburton said: “Wigan in particular is an incredibly attractive location for developers and we need to make sure the right network is in place.

“The link roads will make sure development can happen and the motorway access will resolve a well-known bottleneck.

“We’ve also looked at integrating the stations a few times and hopefully we can minimise inconvenience for passengers. There are massive opportunities as Wigan is one of our few towns with direct mainline access to the capital.

“We have been very keen not to produce a wishlist. These are ideas we’ve developed after hearing what businesses and residents have been saying.”

TfGM has launched a consultation and is very keen to hear Wiganers’ views on the plans. To get involved, visit tfgm.com/2040
