Schools hit by staff walk-out

Top story

Top story

A TEACHERS’ strike hitting Wigan on Wednesday is expected to have a mixed impact on borough schools.

Members of the National Union of Teachers were walking out as part of an ongoing dispute over pensions and working conditions.

Latest figures suggest that of the local authority-maintained schools, 62 will be fully open, 53 partially open and only five closed altogether.

High schools are prioritising year 11 exam classes while lower years have been told not to attend. They include St Edmund Arrowsmith, The Deanery, St John Fisher and Rose Bridge High School.

Wigan branch secretary Max Atkins said the NUT is being forced to act because education minister Michael Gove “is not listening to teachers.” The strike is the first in recent years when the NUT will not be joined by fellow union the NASUWT.
