Skip hire site blaze

The scene of the fire

The scene of the fire

FIREFIGHTERS have been tackling a large amount of wood on fire at a Wigan skip hire site.

Crews from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service were called to Cemetery Road in Ince shortly after 11.35pm last night (Sunday).

At the height of the blaze at Isherwoods skip hire around 40 firefighters and eight fire engines were in attendance, and this was scaled down to three engines just hours later.

Firefighters used water jets throughout the night to tackle the fire and prevent it spreading further.

Group Manager John Fletcher, who was in charge of the incident, said: “The fire involved a 30-metre high stack that contained approximately 300 tonnes of clean wood.

“Firefighters worked hard in hot conditions to stop the fire from spreading to another large stack of wood.”

The fire gave off quite a lot of smoke, however, this is clean and not thought to be harmful.

There are no road closures as a result of the fire, however, traffic on Warrington Road is moving more slowly than normal as hoses are in place along the road.

Firefighters are likely to remain at the scene for the coming days.
