A WIGAN motorway junction was temporarily closed after a horse box almost caught fire.
Police blocked off all lanes on the M6 northbound, near to junction 23 in Haydock at noon today when the brakes overheated on a horse cart.
The owner used a hose pipe and pump with water to cool the vehicle down and waited for the emergency services.
Officers closed the motorway junction for 15 minutes and then opened the outside two lanes.
The horse and driver escaped unharmed.
The incident caused congestion between junctions 23 and 24 but the motorway is now open as normal.
