The Multicultural Celebration was arranged by Wigan Together to show opposition to racist and fascist groups who had planned to hold a “White Rights Day” in the town.
The planned National Front demonstration was cancelled but Wigan Together, a coalition of local trade unions, progressive political parties and community groups, went ahead with their event which included family-friendly entertainment as well as speeches, music, poetry and comedy in the town centre’s Market Square.
It was feared that some far-right protesters would still attempt to turn up in the town meaning police were in attendance but the event went ahead undisrupted.
