Ian Sudworth

THE devastated family of a man fatally stabbed in Wigan have paid tribute to him.

Ian Sudworth, of Beech Hill, was left fatally injured when he was knifed outside the BP garage in Scot Lane, Marsh Green, shortly after 4am on Saturday.

It was thought he attempted to make his way home, but collapsed near the scene and died.

Today, those close to Mr Sudworth, a father, who is thought to be 25, were struggling to come to terms with his death.

In a statement, Mr Sudworth’s parents said: “Ian, you always looked for the silver lining to every cloud. We are having to struggle to find this one all by ourselves. Miss you and love you always.”

Police are investigating the attack, but it is believed Mr Sudworth was with friends at home in Forest Avenue when they went out for cigarettes.

Whilst at the garage, in Scot Lane, a group made a crude comment about Mr Sudworth’s girlfriend and an altercation followed, where he was stabbed.

His girlfriend was also punched in the head.

Mr Sudworth was found unconscious at the scene, and despite the efforts of a passer-by and paramedics, he died a short time later.

A post mortem examination concluded the cause of Mr Sudworth’s death was stab wounds.

One neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: “He was a good friend. He was a quiet lad but all the neighbours knew him.

“He never did anything wrong – this is just disgusting and evil.”

Another friend, who used to attend Shevington High School with him, said: “He was a typical male, and such a lovely lad.”
