A WARD at Wigan Infirmary has been shut following an outbreak of the winter vomiting bug.

A number of patients on Orrell ward have been struck down by the vomiting and diarrhoea virus and staff members have also been affected, leading to health bosses deciding to close the ward to new admissions to contain the outbreak.

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) is urging anyone with symptoms of the virus to stay away from the hospital.

Health chiefs have also asked residents to ensure they wash their hands thoroughly and ensure they take care of hygiene in order to help prevent passing on the virus.

The winter vomiting bug does not usually require medical treatment and can last several days. Anyone suffering from the virus should drink plenty of water and eat small amounts of food.
