A FOOTBALL fan who lit a flare during the Wigan Athletic vs Bolton game at the DW Stadium has been banned from attending matches for three years.

Bolton Wanderers fan Matthew Ormrod was caught in possession of the flare on December 15 in the away end in the corner of the North Stand. The Latics went on to win the game 3-2.

The 21-year-old initially pleaded not guilty before changing his plea before Wigan Magistrates’ Court.

The charge - possession of a flare during a designated sporting event in a sporting ground - is contrary to the Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol) Act 1985.

Ormrod, of Appledore Drive, Bolton, was also fined £130 and ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £20 victim surcharge.
