Crews from Wigan fire station were called to the site off Mesnes Park at 8.45pm yesterday after timber was set alight.

The fire started in a single-storey building at the rear of the site.

It was the latest in a string of incidents at the former college and mill and warnings have previously been given about the dangers of the site.

Tony Callaghan, watch manager at Wigan fire station, said: “We are just waiting for somebody to get seriously injured in there.”

He described the building as a “skeleton” with lots of rubble and uneven floors.

He said the state of the building meant two fire engines had to attend each incident and the repeated calls to the site were “a big waste of our resources”.

Mr Callaghan said: “Anything that’s derelict is dangerous. There are a lot of unexpected holes and things like that in buildings like this.

“Even though it might look like a playground for children, it’s a dangerous place.”
