A FIVE-car pile up has brought the M6 to a standstill.

Commuters attempting to get to Wigan have been caught in long tailbacks after five cars were involved in a collision on the northbound carriageway at around 9am this morning.

North West Motorway Police tweeted that both the north and southbound carriages of the M6 between junction 20 and 21A, Woolston, would be closed for a short period while a air ambulance landed.

Cheshire Fire have confirmed that four cars were involved in the collision and are advising people to avoid the area.
