A FARM worker had a lucky escape after the combine harvester he was driving caught fire.

A crew from Wigan fire station was called to a field on Miles Lane, Appley Bridge at around 10pm last night (Monday).

The man had been driving the vehicle when it suddenly caught fire.

The cause is believed to be an electrical fault. However, the combine harvester was totally destroyed so it was difficult for firefighters to inspect the damage.

A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue service spokesman said: “He was driving it at the bottom of the field when it caught fire.

“He is unhurt but was badly shaken. There was an electrical fault and it was totally destroyed.”
