POLICE are appealing for witnesses to an accident which closed the M6 near Wigan for several hours on Sunday afternoon.

The accident occurred between junctions 27 and 26 near Orrell when a black Renault Clio overturned at about 1.30pm.

A woman and four children, thought to be from the Blackpool area, were taken to hospital in Preston, where a six-year-old boy remains with serious but stable injuries.

The woman and the other three children were treated for minor injuries.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident, although a blue Ford Focus stopped at the scene.

The southbound carriageway was shut for several hours while motorway police investigated the accident, and the northbound carriageway also briefly closed.
