AN elderly Wigan man is set to go on trial accused of assaulting his wife of 60 years.
John Battersby denied assaulting his wife Hilda on August 5 before Wigan Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
The court heard how the 84-year-old defendant, of First Avenue, Hindley, had been held in custody since Monday following the common assault allegation - despite having no previous criminal convictions.
Police had initially agreed to bail Battersby, who appeared hard of hearing as he appeared in the dock, but he had no other address to go to.
Bob Topping, defending, said his client was now in a position to check into a hotel. Battersby was granted conditional bail and is set to stand trial on September 11.
