Shortly after 6am today (Monday) police were called to Laurel Grove in Leigh to reports that three intruders had broken into the house and tried to steal a TV.

The victim, who was initially asleep on his sofa at the time, was beaten by one of the thugs with an unknown blunt object then attacked with a knife during a scuffle with all three.

The gang made off through the back door without stealing anything.

The man was taken to hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.

Sgt Neil Lawless of GMP’s Wigan Borough said: “The man is incredibly lucky to have escaped with only minor injuries.

“He was sleeping on his sofa when these men broke in, leaving him feeling terrified in his own home.

“We are appealing for anyone who may know who these men are, or perhaps saw people acting suspiciously around the time of the break-in to get in touch as soon as possible.

“We want to find out who these men were before they can do this again to someone else.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 0161 856 1828, 101 or via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
