A PROLIFIC criminal who caused £800 worth of damage to a car in order to steal just £5 has been jailed.
Daniel Bamford admitted stealing a £5 note from a car parked outside Gathurst Railway Station before Wigan Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
The 26-year-old, who is already serving a 77-day sentence for handling stolen goods, was caught out when he was spotted acting suspiciously on January 28.
Prosecutor Nicola Ormerod told how a witness called the police after watching the defendant and another man pulling at the door of a Ford Fiesta.
Bamford tried to run away when the police arrived but had to stop when he reached the end of the station platform.
A £5 note, which had gone missing from the car, was found in his pocket.
Melissa Fagan, defending, argued that Bamford, of Chesterton Close, Worsley Mesnes, deserved credit for his early guilty plea.
Magistrates extended his jail term by a further 14 days.
