A WIGAN man has been convicted of raping a 12-year-old girl.

Terence Brickley was also convicted of four specimen offences of sexually assaulting the child.

A jury at Liverpool Crown Court found him guilty of the offences by a 11 to one majority following five hours of deliberations.

They cleared him of an offence of inciting the girl to engage in sexual activity.

Brickley, of Bolton Road, Ashton-in-Makerfield, was further remanded on bail to await sentence on August 29 by the Recorder of Liverpool, Judge Clement Goldstone, QC.

The trial was presided over by Judge Brian Lewis but he was taken ill after summing up the evidence and Judge Goldstone took over so that the trial did not have to be aborted.

The court heard that the offences took place in Ashton on dates between February 2008 and February 2010.

They came to light last summer when she told a relative.
