A MAN has died after being hit by a train in Wigan.
Emergency service were called to Wigan Wallgate at around 7.50am today (Saturday) to reports of a person being struck by a moving train on the line near to the station.
Paramedics pronounced the casualty, who has not been identified, dead at the scene. There are thought to be no suspicious circumstances.
A British Transport Police spokesman said: “BTP officers attended the line close to Wigan Wallgate Railway Station after a report that a person had been struck by a train.
“Officers attended the incident which was reported to police at 7.50am and is currently being treated as non-suspicious.
“Paramedics from the local ambulance service also attended but the person was pronounced dead at the scene.
“A file has been prepared for the coroner. The train involved was the Manchester Victoria to Southport Northern train service.”
Fire crews attended the scene to help recover the body and ensure others’ safety. The line was closed for around an hour but has since been reopened.
