A WIGAN man is fighting for his life after he was the victim of a serious assault in a car park.

Detectives investigating the incident which happened in the early hours of the morning in Chorley on Sunday are appealing for help to trace anyone who witnessed what happened.

The incident happened at around 4.20am on the Iron Car Park, New Market Street, close to Booths Supermarket.

It is thought that the victim, a 30-year-old Wigan man, was punched once to the head by another man. The victim fell to the floor hitting his head on the ground knocking him unconscious.

The man was taken to Royal Preston Hospital with head injuries where he remains in a critical condition.

It is thought that the offender walked from Applejax nightclub trying to engage in altercations with a number of other people before coming into contact with the victim on the car park.

A 19-year-old man from Chorley was arrested on suspicion of Section 18 GBH with intent and has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Det Insp Philip Bowerbank, of Preston CID, said: “This is a serious incident and a man has been left with potentially life threatening head injuries. I would urge anyone who witnessed the incident to contact us on 101.

“We know there were a large number of revellers in the area at the time of the incident so if any of them witnessed what happened or events leading up to the assault, please come forward as any information you hold could help us with our enquiries.”
