A MAN has been jailed after he was found carrying a knuckle duster.
Shaughn Payne, 23, was stopped by police officers in Rugby Road after he was seen acting suspiciously and trying to conceal his identity using the hood of his jacket at around noon on Wednesday.
The officers found a black metal knuckle duster in his tracksuit pocket, which Payne said he was carrying for personal protection but had not used.
Appearing at Wigan Magistrates’ Court, he pleaded guilty to possessing an offensive weapon and was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison.
Magistrates also activated a suspended sentence of 77 days, and ordered him to serve a further 12 weeks for breaching of the terms of a community order.
Sentences for two unpaid debts to the court were ordered to run concurrently and were therefore not taken into consideration.
