A MAN has appeared in court charged in connection with the road smash death of a Wigan teenager.

Alan Shinton is accused of aiding and abetting the death by dangerous driving of Elise Kelly.

The 16-year-old passenger was fatally injured when a BMW 323i crashed into a bollard and garden wall on Warrington Road, Ince, during the early hours of last Saturday morning.

The 17-year-old boy driving the car was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and has since been bailed pending further police inquiries.

Another young woman escaped with minor injuries from the wrecked vehicle and a third passenger was said by police to have left the area before the emergency services arrived.

Shinton, 37, of Nelson Drive, Ince, pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded in custody by Wigan and Leigh magistrates pending his first appearance before a Liverpool Crown Court judge on March 24.

An application for bail had been made but was refused by justices.

Elise was a pupil of Rose Bridge High School and its headteacher Debra Wood has this week led the tributes.

She said: “The whole school community was saddened to hear of the death of Elise Kelly and we offer our condolences to her family and friends.

“Students are being offered the opportunity to contribute to a book of remembrance that will be shared with her family. Counsellors and school staff are available to all students to support them at this very sad and difficult time.”

Police are asking for witnesses and information with regard to the crash and the incident has also triggered a mandatory referral to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) as officers saw the BMW at the Texaco garage on Warrington Road, Platt Bridge, shortly before the collision.

An IPCC spokesman said: “We are looking into what police actions were undertaken prior to the accident occurring. GMP has an ongoing criminal investigation into the road traffic collision.”

Anyone with information about the incident should contact police on 0161 856 4741.
