Man in hospital after main road collision

A man has been taken to hospital following a collision on a major road in Wigan.

Emergency services were called to Orrell Road in Pemberton shortly before 12.35pm today (Tuesday) following reports of a two-car collision.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said one of the drivers is believed to have suffered a medical episode at the wheel. He was taken to Wigan Infirmary by the ambulance service.

Orrell Road had to be closed where it becomes Ormskirk Road, with traffic being stopped at Fleet Street.

The incident caused considerable disruption on the roads, with traffic on the westbound side backing up as far as the Saddle Junction.

The road was shut as far as the junction with the M6.
