One of the two men was assaulted and when his friend went over to help him, he was hit from behind. He fell to the floor and was knocked unconscious.

The 26-year-old man was taken to hospital where he was treated for a broken jaw.

Police are appealing for witnesses and information.

Police Constable Lindsey Sutch of Wigan division said: “We believe there had been some sort of altercation between the two men and the group just before the attack, which left with a man with his jaw broken in three places.

“We don’t have a description of the offender as the victim was hit from behind, but I am appealing to any witnesses who saw the assault to speak to police.

“I would urge anyone who was on King Street West at the time and saw the altercation or the assault to get in touch.”
