A WIGAN man left fighting for his life amid claims he was assaulted has now regained consciousness, but is still not well enough to be quizzed by police.
Dennis Unsworth was rushed to hospital following an incident at the back of the town centre Iceland store in Standishgate shortly before 5pm on Tuesday September 9. The Spring View 33-year-old has since undergone brain surgery at Salford Royal to stem a bleed.
Prosecutors allege he was repeatedly kicked to the head and torso as he lay on the ground.
A police spokesman said: “The victim has regained consciousness and has been transferred to a ward for observation. His condition is now stable. Officers tried to speak to him on September 16 but it was not possible to speak to him properly. It’s important to be careful with him because of the head injury he suffered.”
Damien McKeown, 32, of Leigh Road, Atherton, is accused of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He was remanded in custody by Wigan justices and is due to appear before Liverpool Crown Court on September 24.
