TWO men are accused of beating up a man and throwing him off a 15ft-bridge into freezing water.

Martin Trezise and Paul Lyszkiewicz were arrested after the attack by the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, near to Scholes flats, in the early hours of last Saturday.

At some time between 4.30am and 5.55am, a 42-year-old man was subjected to what police described as a “sustained, serious assault,” culminating in him being thrown from the canal bridge.

He was stranded in standing water and mud, and needed to be rescued by firefighters.

The victim was treated for hypothermia, and suffered two fractured cheek bones with multiple bruises to face.

Trezise, 21, of Stanley Road, Platt Bridge, is charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent, and remanded in custody by Wigan magistrates to appear before Liverpool Crown Court on January 24

Lyszkiewicz, 24, of Thirlmere Avenue, Wigan has been charged with common assault and will reappear before Wigan justices on November 7.
