A CALLOUS thug tried to snatch a pensioner’s handbag in Worsley Mesnes.
The offender attempted to wrestle the victim’s bag from her grasp as she walked along Poolstock Lane at around 12.35pm on Friday, October 4.
The woman was walking with her husband when she noticed the offender kneel down in front of her on the pavement.
However, as she passed him near to the Tippings Arms the would-be theft leapt up and grabbed the woman’s handbag, causing the 72-year-old woman to fall to the floor as they struggled over the bag.
Eventually, the handle snapped and the offender ran off empty-handed.
He is described as being white with a yellow-ish tinge to his face and dark bags underneath his eyes that suggested he may have been on drugs. He was also described as having a dirty appearance, about 5ft 7in tall and of a thin build. He was wearing grey shellsuit trousers and a grey hooded top with the hood pulled up over his face.
Police are now appealing to anyone with information to come forward.
Detective Constable Danny Ritchie said: “The offender was clearly extremely desperate to get his hands on some cash.
“He attempted to lure this woman into a false sense of security by pretending to kneel down to do something, and was only foiled in his attempt to snatch her bag when the handle snapped.
“Whatever his motivation, there can be absolutely no excuse for targeting a 72-year-old woman and putting her through such a frightening ordeal. We therefore need to find this man as soon as possible and bring him to justice.
“If you have any information about who may be responsible or recognise the man then please come forward.”
Anyone with information should call police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
