A young Wiganer who was killed after being involved in a collision with a 4x4 on the M6 has been named.

Merseyside Police confirmed the 25-year-old pedestrian who died on the northbound carriageway on Friday night was Joseph Pidgeon.

Joseph, who was from the Wigan area, suffered fatal injuries in the collision with a Range Rover between junction 23 at Haydock and junction 24 at Ashton at around 10.50pm on July 1.

His grieving family told Merseyside Police they did not wish to release any more information about him at this stage. However, it is believed he went to St John Fisher RC High School in Beech Hill.

The incident closed the M6 for several hours late on Friday night and into the early hours of Saturday morning.

The driver of the Range Rover stopped at the scene and is helping police with their inquiries.

Police investigations are ongoing. Anyone with information should call the MSOC Roads Policing team on 0151 777 5747 or ring independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
