A MASSIVE project will create hundreds of jobs transforming Wigan’s biggest Victorian mills complex into a leisure and business complex.
The £170m redevelopment of Eckersley Mills at Wigan Pier – which has been the subject of two and a half years’ negotiation before being approved this week – will take an army of tradespeople and builders at least to the end of the decade to complete. But once done they will have turned what was once the biggest “cottonopolis” in the region into hundreds of apartments, industrial, leisure and retail units, plus a hotel.
At its heart will be a narrow boat style basin...but, as it won’t now be connected to the canal any barges will be purely of the bar and restaurant hosting variety.
The redesignation and refurbishment is expected to bring more than 1,500 jobs to the area.
