A MAN is fighting for his life after a crash close to Wigan town centre.
The 28-year-old man was riding his moped when it is believed he lost control of the vehicle and collided with a wall near Mab’s Cross Primary School, in Wigan Lane at around 5.40am on Friday.
He was taken to Wigan Infirmary for treatment to a serious head injury and later transfered to Hope Hospital. His condition late yesterday was described as critical and his family was at his bedside.
The incident caused chaos for rush-hour motorists as they were caught in huge traffic queues.
The junction of Wigan Lane and Douglas Road, and the junction of Standishgate and Riverway were both closed as police carried out an investigation, causing major tailbacks for people trying to get to work.
Vehicles were diverted along several other routes leading through the busy town centre.
Traffic eased slightly after 9.30am when the junction of Wigan Lane and Douglas Road reopened, but the Standishgate and Riverway junction remained closed for several hours.
Police have issued an appeal for any witnesses who saw the early-morning crash to call traffic police on 0161 856 7201.
