THE M6 north of Wigan has been closed after a lorry overturned on top of a car.

Miraculously the female driver of the BMW managed to get out of the vehicle with only minor injuries but firefighters had to use cutting gear to help extract the driver of the lorry although he too is not thought to be seriously hurt.

A police spokesman said that both were being taken to hospital to be checked out after the 9.37am crash today (Tuesday) and that the southbound carriageway of the motorway between Leyland and Chorley (junctions 28 and 29) was likely to be closed for a “most of the day.” Lane 3 of the northbound carriageway is also shut. Motorists have been advised to avoid the area.
