A WIGAN mum and daughter are vying to be named the nation’s most knowledgeable soap addicts.

Jackie Wheeler and her daughter Lauren Freeman, of Spring View, beat a host of competitors to get to the final of This Morning’s Soapstar Superbrain Quiz.

This week the duo battled through quick-fire questions, a what-happened-next round and work out which characters were related to EastEnders’ Sharon Watts.

Their winning performance now takes them through to a showdown on Wednesday, August 29 which could re-ignite local derby rivalries if a fancied St Helens pair also get through.

Lauren, 19, who got her A-level results from St John Rigby College yesterday, said: “To apply we had to send an email with a photo and why we would be good on the show and I think the fact we were the first mother and daughter got us through.

“We are both big soap addicts – we watch Coronation Street, Emmerdale and EastEnders and I also like Hollyoaks.

“For the initial round last month we had to dress a mannequin in the style of Coronation Street barmaid Bet Lynch and guess how many episodes Pat Butcher had appeared in EastEnders.

“I believe there is another semi-final next Wednesday, with a pair from St Helens competing, so if they win, there could be some good St Helens v Wigan rivalry at the final, which would be fun.

“It would mean the world to us if we won. .”

Jackie, 47, a shop assistant at Bargain Booze, said: “I enter competitions all the time and never get anywhere, so to get through was a shock.”

Catch the final on ITV’s This Morning on August 29 from 10.30am.
