BAFFLED motorists are now being welcomed to “Wigan Council” when they drive into the borough.
Town Hall chiefs say any damaged or worn “Welcome to Wigan” signs are now being replaced with the newly-branded signs.
Previously, the “Welcome to Wigan” signs have pointed to the town hosting Super League rugby and Premier League football.
But the new ones - such as this one off junction 27 of the M6 at Standish - simply say “Welcome to Wigan Council”.
The signs cost around £600 to supply and erect but a Town Hall spokesman said the cash was being found “in-house”, as and when the old signs need replacing.
The new signs are expected to have at least a 10 to 15-year life expectancy.
Wigan Council chief executive, Donna Hall, said: “We are replacing signs when they have been damaged or worn. No additional budget has been created for this as we would have to replace them anyway and we have chosen to replace them with the new brand which was designed in-house.
“We are trying to raise the profile and the image of Wigan.”
