New fleet of ‘bin wagons’ on order

editorial image

WIGAN will soon benefit from a new fleet of waste collection vehicles.

As part of a joint tender with four other councils in Greater Manchester, Wigan will see 23 new refuse compaction vehicles rolled out across the borough’s waste depots, throughout the year.

Jointly tendering for 50 vehicles with Bolton, Bury, Oldham and Rochdale has made savings of around £684,000.

Sally Wolstencroft, head of Head of Safer Cleaner Greener told a Wigan Council Scrutiny Committee: “We will be getting 23 brand new vehicles as part of the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities vehicle procurement.

“Wigan Council has saved money tendering for these vehicles through AGMA than if we had gone alone.

“So there has been a delay in getting them and it has regrettably caused some disruption to services.

“But we will be getting them soon and they will be rolled out over the course of the year.”

As part of Wigan’s ongoing need to save millions of pounds and its plan to eliminate municipal waste growth by 2020 and achieve recycling rates of 45 per cent by 2015, the local authority has revamped its waste policy and how residents access information regarding their recycling methods.

Members at the committee heard that proposed changes to the way waste collections are made will address a number of issues and problems such as efficient operation of the collection service, safeguarding the community, storage of wheeled bins on the public highway, reducing the number of missed collections and reducing the number of replacement wheeled bins issued to householders.

New and accessible information is also available online and in leaflet form to explain to residents the standard of service they can expect from the local authority, what happens if service is disrupted because of severe weather and when the service will not go ahead where a household fails to present waste or recycle correctly.

The new web pages enable residents to find out when their bin is due to be collected, and discover exactly what type of waste can be put in which bin along with tips for efficient waste recycling.

Sally added: “We don’t want to sound like a draconian council. It’s important that we are educational with residents rather than use the enforcement approach and just bombard people with information. Some of this information has been available before but now it’s a lot easier to locate and take in.”

I will put the record straight, IN MY OPINION. There is much that is wrong with Wigan Council and even more with the ruling party................. But this purchase seems the correct one and furthermore the bin men do work hard and I have hardly seen any waste left as some people say. S .L. O .W .. D. O. W. N,.. the above is my opinion, but there seems a WEB GESTAPO on this site.

All vehicle fleets in both the private and public sectors are replaced every so often.

The last fleet of wagons purchased were brand new a few years ago but when you consider that these vehicles are running almost constantly they soon become worn out and are no longer viable or cost effective to keep on the road, one of the reasons for the increasing amount of breakdowns. By purchasing a new fleet will keep the regular refuse collection timetables to what they should be barring unexpected hold ups ie snow, traffic problems etc etc which nobody could be responsible for. People would complain if the refuse vehicles were off the road on a regular basis, and the purchase is a LOT better than hire which would make peoples eyes water if they knew the actual cost. This is one investment which is worth the money spent, although i cannot agree with various other monies that are used from the "Pot".

Maybe the new wagons won't break down & the bins will be emptied on the correct day. Our blue bins were left unemptied again today (Monday) in Marus Bridge

Rob Neville. Sorry, but our wheely bins are something like 2 and a half times bigger than the old metal ones. If you can't fit a week's rubbish comfortably in one, perhaps you could try recycling more.

Being a bin man in the 70's and 80's was hard work. Today's bin men have it easy

Very welcome indeed - news I received after asking for confirmation of breakdowns in the Tyldesley area in the last 12 months. Answer: over 70 times. Unacceptable. As I say, very welcome but long overdue. This council has been so focused on Empire Building and a Life Centre that it has forgot how to run the basic services our Borough demands. Cash to provide weekly bin collections? Your Labour councillors vote 'no thanks', but here, have another full sized bin.

I hope the council aren't going to export jobs, again....by purchasing German trucks. Makes my blood boil when i see the Mercedes badge on the bin lorries.

I totally agree with sputnik. Our bin men or refuse collectors as they are called are lazy, lazy, lazy, I don't know how they would have coped when we had the metal bins full of ashes and rubish that they had to lift up to the wagon , Oh I forgot it's all health and safety now.
