NHS teaming up with private health experts

Wigan's health trust has gone into partnership with healthcare commissioning experts Tribal in an effort to improve its services.

The scheme – one of the first in the NHS – aims to improve the well-being of Wiganers, increase life expectancy and help people to be healthier.

The scheme has arisen in recognition of the fact that people who live in Ashton, Leigh and Wigan are more likely to die earlier from heart disease, stroke and cancer, than the national average.

Peter Rowe, chief executive of Ashton, Leigh and Wigan Primary Care Trust, said: "Over the next five years the PCT faces the challenge of being able to commission health and social care services that will make a real and lasting improvement in the health of the people living in the borough.

"Our agenda is ambitious and requires us to look at every aspect of the system. The ultimate success of the programme will be measured by the impact the partnership has on the health of local people."
