Oliver's army in need of exorcise

More than 350 years ago Preston was the scene of a vicious battle in which thousands were killed, and now an exorcist is hoping to release the spirits of those who perished.

The Battle of Preston began on August 17, 1648 a time when civil war raged between Royalists and the Parliamentarians, led by Oliver Cromwell.

Cromwell led his army into battle against the forces of the Scottish Duke of Hamilton at the bridge over the River Ribble.

Next week, on the 359th anniversary of this confrontation, exorcist and healer David Taylor plans a "mass exorcism" on a site near where the battle took place.

David, who specialises in spirit cleansing, is combining the event with a psychic night at the London Road pub. He will initially carry out a land healing ceremony on ground near the river.

David says: "I'm going to create a Medicine Wheel, which was used by the native Americans. I'm going to lay stones in a circle and mark the four seasons in it with a cross in the middle.

"It's all about creating a sacred space on the land. There can be heavy atmosphere in the land where battles took place and this ceremony will help clear dark energy that's trapped there."

After the psychic night at the pub, a "rescue ceremony" will be held which David hopes will help rescue the lost souls of soldiers.

He continued; "Somebody mentioned to me that the anniversary of the battle was coming up and I thought 'wow, I could do something with this'."

David admits he has never done anything on this scale before, adding: "I've had a lot of interest in this from lots of people since I did some talks about exorcisms.

"I'd like people to bring flowers and candles with them as offerings to the spirits as they pass into the spirit world."

The psychic night at the Shawes Arms costs 2 per person and all money raised from the event will go the RNLI.
