MORE rapes were reported in Wigan during 2010 than in each of the previous four years.
Concern at rising figures like this is natural but do they necessarily tell the whole story? Perhaps the rise is not so much indicative of a growing number of attacks as that more victims are prepared to come forward.
It is accepted that only a minority of victims of sexual crimes report them for a number of understandable reasons.
So it is important that the authorities do whatever they can to encourage them to break their silence, not least by showing compassion but also by treating allegations, that may look difficult to prove, seriously and with specially trained staff.
I think we are seeing evidence of this happening now in these latest Wigan figures.
And an increase in reports increases the chances of some of the borough’s vilest citizens’ being brought to justice – which is no bad thing.
