AT a time when a third of Wigan’s unemployed are under the age of 25 anything that is going to enhance youngsters’ job opportunities should be welcomed.
This is exactly what the £8m project to create a University Technical College (UTC) in the town centre aims to do.
The recently approved scheme will give hundreds of 14 to 19 year olds each year the chance to learn practical skills in addition to academic subjects and there will be specific emphasis on industries based in the town such as food manufacturing.
The basis of the curriculum has been carefully planned out to suit the local economy and equip people with the skills to forge a career in areas that are growing.
It is fantastic to see such an initiative in the borough and the needs of the next generation of businessmen and women being considered so carefully.
Building on the new UTC will start early next year and is expected to be completed in time for the 2013 academic year.
