TO frack or not to frack, that will be the question to dominate the energy debate for years to come.
Judging by the government’s decision to give a green light to extraction plans and provide tax breaks for companies, it would seem they believe it is an opportunity too good to miss.
But the environmental concerns are numerous and despite assurances of stringent regulations and checks, fracking will remain a highly contentious issue.
Wigan borough of course has a rich history of mining and perhaps the fracking process may hold increased risks in this area.
But that would not prevent Wiganers from benefitting from the boost to the economy it would provide with plenty of jobs perhaps becoming available in neighbouring areas.
With these latest government announcements, it would appear that fracking is coming whether we like it or not.
Let’s hope the rewards prove to outweigh the risks.
