COMMENT - Fire alarm

OUR fire chiefs have a job on their hands trying to turn youngsters away from arson.

It is frightening and saddening to think that up to 100 blazes, some causing widespread destruction injury, were last year attributed to young people - some still at primary school and some even below the age of criminal responsibility.

Perhaps some are blithely unaware of the potentially lethal or livelihood-wrecking consequences of their mischievous actions. But they clearly need to be made aware of such grave by-products before someone dies, and parents as well as the authorities have a key role to play.
