SOUTHGATE could offer relief in more ways than one, it seems.
Not only is it hoped that this stretch of road from Wigan Pier to the Saddle junction will ease traffic congestion but also finally allow engineers to do something about a neighbouring road’s flooding woes.
Eleanor Street residents have had to put up with the unpleasant aftermath of deluges more than anywhere else in the borough and drainage rather than nearby waterways appear to be the source.
Now the new road is open, experts say they can get stuck into the problem. For the locals’ sake the work is the answer to their prayers.
