THE row over Wigan Girl Guides delivering election leaflets has now resulted in this much-respected organisation sending out a national warning to their leaders: Don’t do it!
St John’s Church-based Second Hindley were offered a £100 donation – based on the commercial rate for the job – for their services.
The council candidate whose leaflets they pushed through 2,000 letter boxes across Hindley Green said he was keen to help after witnessing them, bleary-eyed, but typically ever cheerful, trawling around car boot sales at dawn, in an effort to raise vital funds to keep going.
Very worthy, of course, but not really the point.
Such long-established charitable organisations like the Girl Guides, which has earned the right to be supported by all shades of political persuasion, have a strict constitution which aims to guarantee it.
The Girl Guides can’t afford any whiff of partisan support during such elections. Let’s hope this now draws a line under it.
