Music Scene - Charity gig is a great success

A CHARITY gig in Ashton has been branded a huge success. "The Gig" at the Presidential pub in Ashton last Sunday raised £670 for men's cancer charity, Everyman.

Special guests Atomic Hound Dog kicked off the event, organised by Wigan and Leisure Culture Trust's Chris Skoyles and Ian Graham of Ashton's Hangman Records.

The fund-raiser also included performances from 11 local bands, including Former Babies, Toxic Lemon, Testosterone, Branded A Fool, The Randoms, The Hicks, The Ultras, Supamodel and Riff Raff.

"Organising 'The Gig' was hard work," said Chris Skoyles. "But it's been such a rewarding experience, the amount we raised is incredible, and the help and support we've received has been fantastic. I'm a fan of a lot of the bands that played. It was great to get them all together for such an important cause."

Chris and Ian, both 21, decided to support Everyman after reading an article on the charity's website stating that testicular cancer is most prominent in young men aged between 20 and 35.

The startling statistic inspired the Lowton lads to do something to help raise awareness and funds for Everyman, and they promptly set about putting The Gig together with assistance from a host of local retailers.

"We've had a lot of support from businesses in town and we would like to say a big thank you to each and every one of them, as well as to Mark Pritchard and everybody at The Presidential for making today possible," said co-organiser Ian Graham.

Copycats and GeeTees of Ashton, as well as Alans Skateboards, Blowfish clothes store, Ethnic Emporium, Howlin' Rock, Replay Music, Howarth's Music and Uncle Joe's Emporium donated an array of top prizes to raffle at the event.

"We had a fantastic day," continued Ian. "The bands were terrific, and everybody who came seemed to have a top time. We'd like to say a big thank you to everybody for coming!"

l Hangman Records will be returning to The Presidential in October for a special Halloween party.
