SARAH, 42 from Wigan has always been self conscious about the size of her arms and has a question for our fitness guru, The Colonel.
Her question for the Colonel – can you lose weight from specific body areas?
The Colonel says: It is impossible to target fat loss from a specific body area, however with a few changes to your diet and exercise routine, you can create a leaner and more toned physique, turning your flab from fat, to muscle.
The idea that you can spot reduce fat from one body part is a total myth. Many fitness experts would have us believe that through certain regimes, we can shed body fat from one area alone. This is not the case. For example if you’re trying to lose weight around your arms, even doing an endless amount of curls with the dumbbell will only increase the size of your arm.
However, through a developed diet and exercise routine you can achieve a slimmer physique and improve the appearance of the areas you hate the most. To lose fat, you’ve got to burn the calories, keeping on top of the amount you burn during cardio exercise, and making sure you don’t just add these straight back on when you eat. So to tone your arms, reps of curls with the dumbbells after cardio exercise, is what will get you results. Minimise the amount of carbohydrates you eat – these are starchy foods like potatoes, pasta and rice. With a high glucose content, your body uses these as a primary source of energy.
Eat less of them, and your body will have to find this energy from somewhere else, i.e your existing body fat. Also keep track of your calories consumed to calories burned ratio, making sure the calories burned is always higher.
This is the way to ‘trick’ your bingo wings into ‘disappearing’... play the game!
