PLANS to build more than 200 new homes on a former colliery site have taken a major step forward.

Savills planning team secured outline planning permission from Wigan Council for a scheme to put 209 homes in Leigh on part of the site where Parsonage Colliery once stood.

The homes plan is the latest part of ongoing work by developers the Brookhouse Group to transform the ex-industrial site, which had the deepest mine shaft in Western Europe, with a large retail park already attracting several top High Street names to Leigh.

The housing development will be located on the opposite side of Westleigh Brook to the retail park between Lostock Walk and the playing fields.

Matthew Sobic, planning team associate director at Savills Manchester, said: “The residential scheme is part of a wider mixed use commercial and residential development which will see the former colliery site regenerated in full.

“We have been greatly encouraged by Wigan Council’s proactive and can-do attitude to development of the borough.”

Mike Nuttall, group property director at the Brookhouse Group, said: “The delivery of residential development on the land at Westleigh Brook is a key component to our mixed use regeneration of the former Parsonage Colliery.

“ We have already successfully delivered a new Sainsbury’s superstore and Marks and Spencer outlet at the site which has enhanced the shopping offer of Leigh and further economic development is proposed. This demonstrates our ongoing commitment to the enhancement of Leigh.”

The Brookhouse Group has already spent several years developing the Parsonage Retail Park on the ex-colliery site, which last year saw off-price retailer TK Maxx move into a 1,400 sq metre store.

The developers now have three years from the date permission was issued to apply for all the reserved matters relating to the housing and have also entered into a section 106 agreement to produce community facilities offsetting the impact of development.

As it is within 250m of a landfill site the possibility of gas affecting the homes must also be investigated.

Westleigh Brook is not the only housing development in the area moving forward as the North Leigh Park Group recently applied to build wildlife habitats at Pickley Green following two years of preparation to turn land between Westleigh and Hindley Green into houses, industrial units and open space.
