A MAN had a pillow, sleeping bag and a woman in his car when arrested for drink-driving.

Mark Smith said he had been out celebrating his birthday and was going to spend the night in his car in Cheetham Hill, Manchester when he was flagged down by a woman at 3am who took him to a lonely street where they were found by police with the engine running and lights on.

The 47-year-old of Entwistle Road, Leigh, appeared before Manchester and Salford justices to admit failing to provide a breath specimen. Smith, whose marriage had recently collapsed said: “I could not afford a hotel or taxi. What I did was stupid and idiotic.”

He was fined £160 and his licence endorsed with 10 penalty points. He was also ordered to pay £150 criminal court charge plus £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
