A WIGAN-born paedophile is behind bars today after a reign of terror lasting more than 30 years.
Vincent Whittingham was handed a 19-year jail sentence for sexually abusing young girls over three decades.
The 69-year-old had been convicted of his vile crimes at a trial earlier this year.
The offences involved three female victims aged between five and 13, and date back to March 1980.
Whittingham, now of Stydd Lane, Almshouse, Ribchester, was sentenced at Burnley Crown Court for offences including rape, sexual activity with a child and indecent assault.
The hearing was told his sickening crimes first came to light when one of his victims walked into a police station to report offences in June last year. She indicated that offences had been committed against at least one other person, and the investigation began to escalate, culminating in Whittingham’s arrest.
After the hearing Det Con Nick Blackledge, from Ormskirk Public Protection Unit, said: “His crimes left the victims devastated, and they are still trying to pick up the pieces.
“I hope this sentence will help give them some sense of closure.”
