LEISURE bosses have blasted vandals who seriously damaged Wigan park equipment.
Teenagers are believed to be responsible for starting a blaze on a new plastic bucket swing at Coupland Road Rec in Hindley Green.
It’s believed that they used lighter fuel to start the fire which is the latest in a depressing number of attacks on Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust equipment at the site.
The swing was only installed in late March but the damage warranted the immediate removal of the equipment due to exposed reinforcing wire which could be dangerous.
Thankfully the fire was confined to the immediate swing and didn’t damage the swing frame or suspension bar and luckily the dripping molten polypropylene caused only slight damage to the impact surfacing underneath.
A spokesperson for WLCT said: “We work tremendously hard to improve our play facilities and action such as this cannot be tolerated. These are financially tough times and because of this it is an even bigger setback.
“People should have pride in their parks.”
