Players to refund Latics fans

Wigan Athletic's players will personally refund every travelling fan who endured Sunday's capital punishment at Tottenham.

Skipper Mario Melchiot admitted Latics had 'badly let down' their fans during the club-record 9-1 mauling at White Hart Lane.

And the players have made the unusual gesture of offering each supporter, who bought a ticket from the DW Stadium, their money back in recompense.

Latics would not reveal how many of their loyal fans made the 400-mile round trip, other than to say it was 'sizeable' – with best estimates

ranging between 350 and 450.

"We feel that, as a group of players, we badly let down our supporters on Sunday, and this is a gesture we have to make and pay them back for their tremendous loyalty," Melchiot said.

"There is not a lot else to say, other than as a group of professionals we were embarrassed by the way we performed.

"We feel it was below our standards, and this is something we feel we owe to the fans.

"Now we have to draw a line under the game, focus completely on training this week and bounce back on Saturday."

Fans who qualify for the refund should contact the Latics ticket office, either in person or by phoning 0871 33 66 552. Refunds must be claimed on or before Friday, December 4, 2009.
