POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a girl, 19, died following a road traffic collision in Wigan.

At around 9:15pm last night (Sunday) police were called to Central Park Way, Wigan, to reports that a serious collision had taken place between two cars.

Officers attended and established that a white Ford Focus ST was travelling on Central Park Way, Wigan, when it attempted to overtake the car in front before being involved in a head on collision with a black Peugeot 206.

A 19-year-old woman, who was travelling as a passenger in the Peugeot, sustained serious head injuries and was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car, a 27 -year-old man, sustained serious head injuries and was taken to hospital where his condition is described as stable.

A 27-year-old woman who was travelling as a passenger in the Ford Focus ST sustained serious injuries, including a fractured pelvis, and was taken to hospital where she remains in a serious condition.

The 38-year-old driver of the car was initially arrested at the scene before being taken to hospital to be treated for serious injuries to his arm and body, including a fractured pelvis, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

Investigators would like to speak to the driver of the car that the Ford Focus ST was attempting to overtake. They initially stopped at the scene but left prior to police attendance.

There is no suggestion that driver did anything wrong however police wish to speak to them to get an account of what happened. The car is described as an ‘old type’ Ford Fiesta

PC Paul Hailwood of the GMP Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of the young woman who tragically died as a result of this collision. We have got specially trained officers providing them with support at this heart-breaking time.

“We believe that just prior to the incident, the driver of the Ford Focus ST attempted to overtake another car described as an ‘old style’ Ford Fiesta and we are very keen to speak to the driver of that car and take an account of what happened.

“I would like to stress that we do not believe them to have done anything wrong, we would just like to speak to them to assist with our enquiries.

“We would also like to appeal for any other witnesses to the incident to come forward and help us establish exactly what happened in the build-up to this tragic incident.”
